And while there were also fewer \u201cblockbuster\u201d deals, the big one last year \u2013<strong> Inspire Brands <\/strong>acquisition of <strong>Sonic<\/strong> \u2013 involved nearly 1,000 more units than 2017\u2019s largest deal \u2013 <strong>Restaurant Brand International\u2019s<\/strong> purchase of <strong>Popeye\u2019s. <\/strong>(Check out last year\u2019s chart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chainstoreguide.com\/t-Newsroom_2018_Jan_25_Restaurant_Exclusive.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>In other deals, <strong>JAB Holdings<\/strong> was particularly busy continuing to assert itself as the second largest player (after <strong>Starbuck\u2019s<\/strong>) in the US coffee, breakfast, bakery and sandwich space. It\u2019s acquisition of<strong> Insomnia Cookies<\/strong> (via its <strong>Krispy Kreme<\/strong> business) and<strong> Pret a Manger<\/strong> not only provided JAB with a couple hundred additional US restaurants but also a ton of upside with room to grow both concepts in the States. With its acquisition of<strong> Smash Burger,<\/strong> the Philippines-based quick-serve chain with more than 3,000 restaurants worldwide got its long sought-after burger concept.
