For a lot of families, it already happened, buses are running, backpacks are packed, and the summer routine fizzled out weeks ago. Sales and marketing teams selling into retail & foodservice chains are living through the same shift. They just haven’t clocked that it applies to them too.

Start with the list, because everything else sits on top of it. Marketing Sherpa, the research HubSpot still leans on for its own decay benchmarks, puts B2B contact data breakdown at 2.1 percent a month. That’s not one bad batch, it’s constant churn. Someone gets promoted out of the role you’re targeting and the person backfilling it hasn’t shown up in any database yet. A store manager transfers to a different region and takes your only contact at that location with them. None of it announces itself. A real cleanse means going through the list on a schedule, not just when something breaks, and checking who’s actually still in the seat you’re targeting rather than assuming last quarter’s list still holds up now.

Email carries its own version of the same problem, and it compounds fast. ZeroBounce analyzed more than 11 billion addresses last year and found at least 23 percent of a typical list goes bad annually. Every dead address is a bounce, and bounces tell Gmail and Outlook your list is dirty, which drags down deliverability for every other email in that same send, including the good addresses. Test a small slice of the list before you blast the whole thing. If that batch comes back clean, send the rest. And anyone who hasn’t opened or clicked in three or four months needs to come out of the regular rotation, not deleted, just separated and sent something lighter. Then regularly validate your sending database to clear out any potential hazards.

The pipeline needs its own look too, and it means two different things worth checking separately. On the outbound side, be honest about whether your cadence actually held together over the summer or quietly turned into radio silence while half the team was out on PTO. On the CRM side, open up the deals sitting in your pipeline stages and ask which ones haven’t moved since spring. A deal that’s been sitting in the same stage since May isn’t in progress; its dead weight inflating your pipeline value and quietly wrecking the accuracy of whatever forecast your manager is building.

None of that fixes the message itself. The pitch you were running in March was built wherever your prospects’ priorities were back then, and budgets have shifted since. This is where it’s worth looking at where the industry is actually headed. Content Marketing Institute’s newest research on B2B marketers found nearly nine in ten say they personalize content, but almost 60 percent still keep it to one or two channels, essentially a first name in an email subject line and nothing else. The real trend for the year ahead isn’t fancier AI personalization; it’s stretching what you already do into more places your prospects actually pay attention to, social, landing pages, the content itself, not just the send. Pull your last few campaigns and check honestly whether the message still matches how prospects talk about their problems now, and whether your ICP (Ideal Customer Profile) still points at the accounts worth chasing.

That same research landed on something worth sitting with. The B2B teams pulling ahead this year aren’t the ones chasing every new AI feature; they’re the ones tightening their fundamentals first and using AI to build on that foundation, not replace it. The reset comes before the tools, not after.

At least 23 percent of a typical B2B email list goes bad every year, according to ZeroBounce‘s analysis of more than 11 billion verified addresses. That’s before contact-level decay, cadence gaps, and stale pipeline stages even enter the picture.

Every one of those checks depends on knowing who you’re targeting, and that’s the piece that breaks first without anyone noticing. This is where CSG Elite Collection earns a real mention. It refreshes contact data daily across entire organizational charts, not just the C-suite, so the list, the email send, and the pipeline you’re auditing all reflect who’s there right now, not who was there in June.

Back to school works because it’s a ritual, not a one-time scramble. Your pipeline needs the same thing. Do this audit every fall, not just this once.

Class is back in session. So is your pipeline’s homework.

Back to school isn’t a September thing anymore.
