March 2012: Winn-Dixie announced that its shareholders had voted overwhelmingly in favor of its acquisition by Bi-Lo, thus completing the $560 million sale of the company that was founded in 1925. The deal creates an organization with 690 stores and 63,000 employees in eight states, and that is expected to continue operating under both banners. <\/div>\n

The combined company will operate from Jacksonville<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> because it is centrally located within the chain\u2019s eight-state system<\/span>, according to a BI-LO press release. <\/div>\n

Peter Lynch, CEO of Winn-Dixie, is leaving the company. Randall Onstead, CEO of Bi-Lo, now takes the reins of the combined organization.<\/div>\n

According to company reports, both Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie will continue to operate as separate companies. It is also anticipated that the companies will continue to operate under the Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie trade name banners. Both companies do not currently expect any store closures as a result of the combination. <\/div>\n
