However, direct-to-consumer comparable-net sales increased 14%. Total sales for the quarter rose 9% to\u00a0$731 million. For the year ended Jan. 31, total net sales increased to $2.5 billion.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Mergers and Acquisitions:<o:p><\/o:p><\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Hudson\u2019s Bay Co.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> has completed the acquisition of <b>Lord &#038; Taylor<\/b>. HBC has dissolved the umbrella company that had until now held the two chains, and HBC will now operate The Bay and Lord &#038; Taylor. The new entity will be run by Bay CEO Bonnie Brooks. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Industry Insight:<o:p><\/o:p><\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">American Eagle Outfitters Inc.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> plans to expand in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Japan<\/st1:country-region>, with the opening of three stores in <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Tokyo<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>in 2012. The company also announced the opening of its first-ever store in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Israel<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Flip Flop Shops<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> announces it will expand its footprint to 90-plus shops by the end of 2012, with an additional 40-plus already in the pipeline for 2013 openings.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">New shop openings in 2012 include high-profile locations in <st1:city w:st=\"on\">St. Thomas<\/st1:city>, <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region>Virgin Islands; <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Honolulu<\/st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">HI<\/st1:state>; <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Miami<\/st1:\n\ncity>, FL.; Destin Commons in Destin, FL.; and <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">San Luis Obispo<\/st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>. Through Flip Flop Shops&#8217; controlled, global-expansion strategy, the brand projects 236 locations in its development pipeline by 2013.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Forever 21 Inc.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> opened it\u2019s first-ever Hong Kong store and it\u2019s first-ever in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">France<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. In addition, the company plans to open three more stores in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">France<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> over the next 14 months.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">J. Crew Group Inc.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> will debut a new concept store centered around its <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Ludlow<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> men\u2019s suit on Feb. 29. The 2,100-sq.-ft. store will be located in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:state w:st=\"on\">New York<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>&#8216;s TriBeCa neighborhood, and will offer an assortment of suits, Thomas Mason shirts, shoes and neckwear. In addition, the shop will have suit experts and a tailor on hand to work with customers, and will offer monogramming and courier delivery. At this point, the company does not have plans to roll out additional <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Ludlow<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> shops. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">JCPenney Co. Inc.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> announced plans to do away with the hundreds of sales it offers each year in favor of a simpler approach to pricing. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Kohl&#8217;s Corp.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> is doubling the size of its design office in <st1:city w:st=\"on\">New  York City<\/st1:city>, as well as adding a design studio in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Santa Monica<\/st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>. The company also announced that it has entered into a purchase agreement to build a new e-commerce distribution center in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">DeSoto<\/st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">TX<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> expected to open in summer 2012.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Longchamp<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> plans to add up to 25 directly operated boutiques and concessions this year, including 10 store openings in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">China<\/st1:country-region>, as well as additional units in the <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. Longchamp plans to open a third location in <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Manhattan<\/st1:city>, at <st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Rockefeller<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">Center<\/st1:placetype>, and a boutique at the King of Prussia Mall near <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Philadelphia<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. The company also will enter partnerships with Neiman Marcus and Holt Renfrew this year, in addition to its existing partnerships with Nordstrom, Bloomingdale\u2019s and <st1:street w:st=\"on\">Saks  Fifth Avenue<\/st1:street>. Longchamp ended 2011 with 236 directly operated boutiques and in-store shops.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Macy&#8217;s<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> has filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit against Martha Stewart Living, alleging that a new licensing agreement with rival <b>JCPenney<\/b> violates its exclusive contract with the brand. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Michael Kors<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> recently opened boutiques in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Barbados<\/st1:country-region>and <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Mexico<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Payless ShoeSource<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> continues its expansion into international markets with new franchise agreements for stores in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Korea<\/st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Thailand<\/st1:country-region> and <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Vietnam<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">The Sports Authority<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> is prepping to debut its first S.A. Elite concept store location on the East Coast. A 10,000 sq. ft. store is slated to open this summer at The Mall in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Columbia<\/st1:city>,  <st1:state w:st=\"on\">MD.<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> In all, the chain now has seven S.A. Elite stores in operation.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Urban Outfitters Inc.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> named Tedford Marlow as head of the Urban Outfitters Group. Marlow had retired from the chain in 2010, after spending nine years as president of the Urban Outfitters brand. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Von Maur<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> announced it expects to have 29 stores in 13 states by the end of 2013.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">In the last decade, the company added 10 Von Maur stores, beefing up its head count of brick-and-mortar stores to 26 in 11 states. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Zumiez Inc.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> will move its e-commerce fulfillment operations from its headquarters in <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Everett<\/st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">WA<\/st1:state>, to <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Edwardsville<\/st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">KS<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, in May to accommodate their growing online business and to increase the speed of product deliveries to online customers.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Real Estate:<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">City Sports<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> plans to relocate its store in <st1:address w:st=\"on\"><st1:street w:st=\"on\">Suburban   Square<\/st1:street>, <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Ardmore<\/st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">PA<\/st1:state><\/st1:address>, into an 8,000 sq. ft. space previously occupied by <b>Talbots<\/b>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Esprit Holdings<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> will close all 93 of its stores in <st1:place w:st=\"on\">North America<\/st1:place>, after abandoning previously announced plans to sell off the business or find a licensed operator to run the stores.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Flip Flop Shops<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"> announced plans to open 40 new stores by the end of 2012. An additional 40 stores are already in the planning stages for 2013.
