The metro area surrounding our nation\u2019s capital has long been a cultural hotbed, with its diverse blend of restaurants and trendy neighborhoods.\u00a0 This is almost out of necessity, of course, as the area is home to many affluent residents and flush with diplomatic travelers.\u00a0 Now, the core-based statistical area (CBSA) encompassing Washington and the surrounding Arlington and Alexandria is experiencing an influx of new supermarket locations.<\/p>\n
In recent years, Harris Teeter, H Mart, and Aldi have made additions to the Washington CBSA.\u00a0 According to local reports, by 2017 Whole Foods and Harris Teeter will open new locations in the Capital Riverfront neighborhood of Southeast DC. \u00a0Shoppers in the area also have the privilege of visiting Wegmans\u2019 eight locations, although the company is still searching for a site within D.C. \u00a0Trader Joe\u2019s, with 13 stores in the CBSA, currently has a new location under construction. Discounters Walmart and Costco have also opened new stores in the market. What all this means is a bevy of supermarket options for shoppers in the area, and more competitors to eat into Giant Food and Safeway\u2019s market share.\u00a0 The chart below details the Washington CBSA\u2019s grocery operators with their respective fiscal 2012 figures; the market could look drastically different this time next year.<\/p>\n
