{"id":336,"date":"2011-08-15T08:14:00","date_gmt":"2011-08-15T12:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom.chainstoreguide.com\/2011\/08\/aggressive-expansions-and-contractions-across-the-discountspecialty-database-files\/"},"modified":"2011-08-15T08:14:00","modified_gmt":"2011-08-15T12:14:00","slug":"aggressive-expansions-and-contractions-across-the-discountspecialty-database-files","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chainstoreguide.com\/offthechain\/2011\/08\/aggressive-expansions-and-contractions-across-the-discountspecialty-database-files\/","title":{"rendered":"Aggressive Expansions and Contractions Across the Discount\/Specialty Database Files"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" trbidi=\"on\"><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Recently we have seen an unusual array of companies, representing distinct aspects of CSG\u2019s seventeen market segment database of Discount Stores &#038; Specialty Retailers, announcing sizeable investments in expansion, radical remodeling and renovation, as well as noteworthy cases of contraction of store prototype size.\u00a0 The expansions and radical renovations would be great stories anytime but coming through during the doldrums of a protracted recession, they serve as indicators of the stunning levels of success these companies are reaching:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>Disney Store<\/b> plans to open its interactive concept stores prototype in more than 40 locations in 2011. \u00a0The company said that by the end of 2011, it will have 60 new concept stores in 16 major markets in <st1:place w:st=\"on\">North America<\/st1:place> and eight countries.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>In spring 2012, the original Disney Store location at the Glendale Galleria in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Glendale<\/st1:city>,  <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Calif.<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, will be remodeled to celebrate the retail chain\u2019s 25th anniversary. First built in 1987, the store pioneered the entertainment retail concept. The <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Glendale<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> store will be just one of many planned remodels in 2012.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>New and remodeled Disney Store locations to open throughout the fall and winter of 2011 include:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>Disney Store\u2019s Florida Mall location in <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Orlando<\/st1:city> will be remodeled this fall with the new design, and Pembroke Lakes Mall in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Pembroke Pines<\/st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Fla.<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> will open an all-new location.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Locations in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Canada<\/st1:country-region>\u2019s West Edmonton Mall in <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Edmonton<\/st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Alberta<\/st1:state> and Southcentre Mall in <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Calgary<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> will open this fall.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><br \/>Kenwood<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Towne<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">Center<\/st1:placetype> in <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Cincinnati<\/st1:city> will receive the first newly-designed Disney Store in the state of <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Ohio<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><st1:state w:st=\"on\"><br \/>Texas<\/st1:state> will celebrate the opening of Disney Store locations at La Plaza mall in <st1:city w:st=\"on\">McAllen<\/st1:city>, and Houston Galleria in <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Houston<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>The first newly-designed Disney Store in <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Missouri<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> will open at the St. Louis Galleria.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><st1:state w:st=\"on\">California<\/st1:state> will get two new locations this fall with stores opening in the Galleria at <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Roseville<\/st1:city> in <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Roseville<\/st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Calif.<\/st1:state> and <st1:street w:st=\"on\"><st1:address w:st=\"on\">Westfield Fashion Square<\/st1:address><\/st1:street> in Sherman Oaks, <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Calif.<\/st1:place><\/st1:state><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>Dollar General<\/b> announced its plans to expand its operations to <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">California<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> in 2012.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The <st1:state w:st=\"on\">California<\/st1:state> announcement comes on the heels of the company\u2019s planned expansions into three new states in 2011 \u2014 <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Connecticut<\/st1:state>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state> and <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>Marbles: The Brain Store<\/b>, the Chicago-based retailer that sells toys and other products designed to stimulate and strengthen the brain, announced that it has received $5.5 million from private investors, which the company will use to open 10 stores on the East Coast and in Chicago this year.\u00a0 Nine of the new shops will be in <st1:state w:st=\"on\">New Jersey<\/st1:state>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Massachusetts<\/st1:state> and <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Maryland<\/st1:state>, with one in <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Chicago<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. Marbles is looking to expand to the West Coast and the South in 2012.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>Target<\/b> has unveiled the first wave of the Zellers sites it will be taking over in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Canada<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, representing 105 locations in all 10 Canadian provinces. \u00a0The vast majority of the sites will become Target stores after securing the necessary construction approval for extensive renovation. The stores will open beginning in 2013.<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The majority (45) of the locations are in <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Ontario<\/st1:state>, with 19 in <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Quebec<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. The other Canadian locations include 15 in <st1:state w:st=\"on\">British  Columbia<\/st1:state>, 13 in <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Alberta<\/st1:state>, five <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Manitoba<\/st1:state>, two each in <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Saskatchewan<\/st1:state>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Nova Scotia<\/st1:state> and <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Newfoundland<\/st1:state> and Labrador, and one each in <st1:state w:st=\"on\">New Brunswick<\/st1:state> and <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Prince Edward Island<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Each selected site is subleased to Zellers and will continue to operate as a Zellers store for some time. \u00a0Six to nine months prior to opening as Target stores, the majority of stores will be closed for significant remodeling. On average, about $10 million will be invested in remodeling each location.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>Target also announced that its Canadian headquarters will be located in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Mississauga<\/st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Ontario<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>. The company will occupy about 180,000 sq. ft. in a building that was built to LEED (Leadership in Energy &#038; Environmental Design) Gold standards and is owned by Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan. After some remodeling, the majority of Target&#8217;s Canadian corporate team will begin occupying the space in early 2012. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>Best Buy<\/b> first announced plans to cut its big-box store square footage by 10 percent during the next three to five years and focus on boosting its online presence.\u00a0 Shortly after this initial announcement, the company revealed that it plans to increase the size of its store reductions to a total of twenty percent, per store.\u00a0 <br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Typically this would amount t<\/p>\n<p>o reductions from about 45,000 square feet to about 36,000 square feet.\u00a0 Further, the company hopes to sublease the resulting vacant space to other merchants including grocers, beauty supply stores and home furnishings retailers.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Best Buy has reported disappointing financials in recent quarters and is shaking up its merchandising model. \u00a0However, one has to question how much cutting retail selling space will help its efforts against very strong online competition.\u00a0 There will be some cost savings in real estate and personnel but one would hope that the company is already maximizing its Internet sales efforts.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Almost simultaneously Staples announced its plans to shrink its footprint with smaller stores that cost less to open and operate and reflect the trend of shoppers moving their focus online.\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Several years ago Office Depot decided to offer leasing options in some of its stores to non-competing retailers.\u00a0 At the time many saw this as a sign of Office Depot\u2019s financial concerns.\u00a0 Now it seems perhaps they were correctly reading the future.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-crexECo9NEc\/Ths7Yq5Q8uI\/AAAAAAAAA0Q\/3YIORPcAgNQ\/s1600\/arthur_headshot.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-crexECo9NEc\/Ths7Yq5Q8uI\/AAAAAAAAA0Q\/3YIORPcAgNQ\/s1600\/arthur_headshot.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b><i>Arthur Rosenberg, Senior Editor\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Arthur has worked at Chain Store Guide for 20 years.
