The chain, which will open its first Detroit store in 2013, is in talks to bring stores to parts of Chicago and Newark, NJ which have little access to fresh food. Some of these areas have few or no grocery stores.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;\">The strategy is a different one for the natural and organic retailing giant, which operates in over 80% of the states across the country. \u00a0The company hopes that focusing on smaller, underserved communities will help to accelerate its high growth plans. Co-CEO Walter Robb confirmed:\u00a0 <span style=\"background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;\">\u201cWe\u2019re accelerating growth,\u201d Robb said in an interview at the company\u2019s Austin, Texas headquarters. \u201cThat\u2019s going to take us places we have not been to before.\u201d Recent new store openings in \u2018smaller\u2019 markets \u2013 those with populations of about 75,000 are up for consideration \u2013 include Glen Mills, Pennsylvania and West<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"background: white; border: none windowtext 1.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0in; padding: 0in;\">Des Moines<\/span><span style=\"background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;\">, Iowa. It\u2019s targeting Wichita,<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"background: white; border: none windowtext 1.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0in; padding: 0in;\">Kansas<\/span><span style=\"background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;\"> for another. Store sizes range from 15,000 square ft. to 75,000 sq. ft. and it is possible Whole Foods will have to shrink its average store size further in order to compete in smaller markets. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;\">In late August, rumors were swirling that it <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;\">Whole Food Market\u00a0could possibly be in talks to acquire six supermarkets in the Boston area from Johnny\u2019s Foodmaster, based in Chelsea, MA. Whole Foods had previously expanded in the area through the acquisition of the Bread &amp; Circus chain.\u00a0 The company famously increased its store size when it purchased the Wild Oats chain in 2007\u2013 a merger that generated controversy and scrutiny from the FTC.
