Words like \u201cdismal\u201d and \u201ccrushing\u201d have been tossed around this month to describe holiday sales at the Macy\u2019s and Kohl\u2019s of the world, and they\u2019re well-earned descriptors.<\/p>\n<p>November and December 2016 same store sales were south of 2015 numbers at four of the five\u00a0 companies at the top of the charts in <strong>Chain Store Guide\u2019s<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chainstoreguide.com\/c-79-department-store-retailer-leads.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Database of Department Stores and Shoe Retailers<\/a>. The exception is Nordstrom, only because it opts not to publicly report holiday sales outside of the standard quarterly earnings cycle (which comes around again in mid-February for the company). Smart money says the results will be less than spectacular.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve pulled together November and December same store sales for Macy\u2019s, Kohl\u2019s, Sears, Kmart and JCPenney in the chart below. The figures represent company-wide sales for each of the entities, with the exception Sears and Kmart as Sears Holdings released separate sales figures.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chainstoreguide.com\/email\/deptstores_exclusive2017.jpg\" alt=\"department stores\" width=\"454\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sears and Kmart may be lost causes \u2013 and it won\u2019t be this one holiday season that does them in.
