{"id":94,"date":"2012-08-19T11:07:00","date_gmt":"2012-08-19T15:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom.chainstoreguide.com\/2012\/08\/industry-updates-commercial-real-estate-2\/"},"modified":"2012-08-19T11:07:00","modified_gmt":"2012-08-19T15:07:00","slug":"industry-updates-commercial-real-estate-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chainstoreguide.com\/offthechain\/2012\/08\/industry-updates-commercial-real-estate-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Industry Updates: Commercial Real Estate"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" trbidi=\"on\"><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b><br \/><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b><br \/><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Apparel Specialty Stores and Department Stores<br \/><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Ann Taylor<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0celebrated the grand opening of its 7,500 sq. ft. new Ann Taylor Loft store at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, in Central Valley, NY.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Cabela\u2019s<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0announced it would open a store in Saginaw, MI in spring 2013, and a store in Anchorage, AK in spring 2014.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Daffy\u2019s<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0is going out of business and will close all of its 19 stores this fall.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Express\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">will open two flagship stores in 2013, one in Times Square in New York City in the summer and the other in San Francisco\u2019s Union Square in the fall.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Flip Flop Shops<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0is expanding into the Chicago market. The chain plans to open more than 10 stores there over the next five years.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Gap Inc.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0will replace its existing store along Miami Beach\u2019s Lincoln Road with a two-story 29,000 sq. ft. flagship. Construction will begin in early 2013.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">H&#038;M<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0is closing its downtown Hong Kong flagship location in fall 2013.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Henri Bendel<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0opened a 2,300 sq. ft. store at Cherry Hill Mall, in Cherry Hill, NJ.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Hot Topic Inc.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">plans to open 20 Torrid stores by the end of the year.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">The Neiman Marcus Group Inc.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0plans to close the Neiman Marcus store located in Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis, MN. The 118,000 sq. ft. store will close by July 2013.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Nordstrom<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0plans to launch its first stores in Canada in 2013. Nordstrom Inc. is accelerating the growth of its Nordstrom Rack concept. The company plans to open 15 additional Rack stores before the end of the year, and 24 stores are planned for 2013. By the end of 2016 the company expects to operate more than 230 Nordstrom Rack stores.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Rag &#038; Bone<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0will open a flagship store in London, marking the retailer\u2019s first-ever European flagship.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Recreational Equipment Inc.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0will open its first-ever Kansas store in Overland Park. The 23,500 sq. ft. store is slated to open in fall 2013. Additional stores are slated to open this fall in San Antonio, TX; Cincinnati, OH; Woodbridge, VA; and Medford, OR.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Sports Authority<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0will open a 25,000 sq. ft. store at the Broadmoor Towne Center in Pennsylvania. The opening of that store will follow the closing of Sports Authority\u2019s location at the Rustic Hills Shopping Center.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Visionworks<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\";\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0opened its first store in the Philadelphia area. Located in Deptford Township, NJ, it is the first of more than 25 stores expected to open in the market through 2013.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\";\"><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><b>Drug Stores and HBC Chains<\/b><\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Bartell Drugs<\/span><\/b><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0will move its corporate headquarters in October 2012 from an industrial section of South Seattle to a new corporate center in West Seattle.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">A Phoenix\u00a0<b>Walgreens<\/b>\u00a0is being renovated into what could be the first Walgreens concept store in Arizona. After the remodeling, the store is expected to offer a selection of fresh food items, as well as an expanded pharmacy section with new features.<\/span><\/span><br \/><span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><b><br \/><\/b><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><b>Grocery, Supermarket, and Convenience Stores.<\/b><\/span><\/span><br \/><span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><b><br \/><\/b><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: white; font-size: medium; margin-left: 0in;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Coborn&#8217;s Inc<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">. plans to open five new stores in North Dakota by 2014, in the cities of Stanley, Tioga, Watford City, Dickinson and Minot. The move is part of a broader move into the state.<\/p>\n<p><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">Whole Foods<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0announced that it plans to open 70 stores over the next two years, in addition to the 25 being unveiled this year. The company currently operates 329 units.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"; font-size: 11pt;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;\"><b>Food Service\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><br \/><span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;\"><b><br \/><\/b><\/sp\n\nan><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Another Broken Egg Caf\u00e9<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0announced the signing of a multi-unit franchise agreement for 10 restaurants in the Atlanta market over the next five years.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">CKE Restaurants, Inc<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">. announced its intent to develop new\u00a0<b>Hardee\u2019s<\/b>\u00a0restaurants throughout the Minneapolis, MN, area. The company is seeking to expand its Minneapolis footprint over the next several years and sees the potential to develop more than 59 new restaurants in the market.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">East Coast Wings<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0is expanding its operations into GA, SC, and TX in 2012, and into AL, FL, KY, and VA thereafter.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Hurricane AMT LLC<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0(dba\u00a0<b>Hurricane Grill &#038; Wings<\/b>) announced a new development agreement, adding a minimum of six locations to North Atlanta.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Jamba, Inc<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">. announced expansion plans into new markets with new franchisees including Long Island, NY; Wayne, NJ; Pittsburgh, PA; Milwaukee, WI; and Toledo, OH. Store expansion with existing franchisees is also planned in CA, OH, KY, IN, and CT. These eight franchise agreements represent a total of 32 new Jamba Juice stores to be developed over the next five-to-seven years.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Krispy Kreme\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">is planning to return to Charlotte, NC, with plans to open five company-owned shops. The expansion plan includes sites near the UNC-Charlotte campus area.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">McAlister\u2019s Deli<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0has signed a multi-unit store development agreement calling for new restaurants in central MI. McAlister&#8217;s also announced the signing of three multi-unit store development agreements with new and existing franchisees for 10 new restaurants in the Greater Tampa, FL area, and five new restaurants in Lincoln and Omaha, NE.\u00a0<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Zaxby\u2019s<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0signed a multi-unit development agreement to open 32 Zaxby\u2019s restaurants in the Norfolk and Richmond VA areas within the next seven years. Zaxby\u2019s also opened its first location in LA, its 18th state.
