Since the demise of Linens ‘n Things, Bed Bath & Beyond stands out as the closest thing to an old fashioned category killer as there is currently. Bed Bath has managed to dominate the general housewares retailer category with strong branding accompanying smart and efficient real estate dealings.

Earlier this year Bed Bath & Beyond announced its acquisition of Cost Plus, Inc.  This would add at least 259 stores to the company’s portfolio.  The acquisition should also enrich Bed Bath’s portfolio of products offered.  Bed Bath is expected to immediately incorporate several Cost Plus exclusives into its product mix, including furniture, food and beverages.

The announcement of the consummation of the transaction noted that the acquisition is not subject to financing and will be funded by Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. with available cash.  This item in itself is noteworthy even in the healthiest of economic climates.  In a cash strapped economy such as we have experienced for the past several years, this is nearly miraculous and speaks volumes for company management.
