Outmarket: Dos and Don’ts of Buying a Prospect List

Outmarket: Dos and Don’ts of Buying a Prospect List

Someone offers you 50,000 verified contacts for $499. That is not a list. That is a countdown clock, and it started the moment you paid.

Contact information goes out of date constantly; people change jobs, get promoted, switch emails. B2B contact data becomes outdated at a rate somewhere between 22.5% and 70.3% a year depending on the benchmark, and one 2025 analysis of more than 11 billion verified emails puts the annual rate for email addresses specifically at roughly 23%. The list you buy in January is already outdated by March.

There is a newer version of this problem, and it is worse. Some of what gets sold as a “list” today was never collected; it was generated. An AI tool is given job titles and company names and asked to guess the rest. It does not know if a guessed email is real. It knows the format is statistically likely, and it answers with total confidence either way. One 2025 evaluation of 40 AI models found that all but four were more likely to give a confident wrong answer than a correct one on hard questions. A guessed contact looks exactly like a verified one, until it bounces.

Both versions cost you the same way. You have no idea where a broker’s contacts came from or whether anyone on the list agreed to hear from you, and some of those addresses exist purely to catch senders who never asked permission. Send them and you generate spam complaints. Gmail and Yahoo track this closely: cross 0.3% and they start filtering you into spam automatically, with 0.1% already a warning sign. Nearly 1 in 10 senders have admitted to buying or scraping contacts in the past two years, and those are the senders most likely to trip that line. Once flagged, recovery takes four to eight weeks of careful sending, two months where even your legitimate email might not land.

The stat that should stop you before you buy: a purchased list is a quarter wrong on day one. A generated one was never right to begin with. Either one can cost you two months of inbox access you spent years earning.

So do ask two questions before you buy anything: where did this come from, and how often is it refreshed. Do confirm real sourcing and real consent before you commit to a provider. Do judge a list by accuracy, not size; a smaller list of real decision makers beats a bigger file of guesses every time. Don’t purchase from anyone who can’t answer both questions clearly. Don’t accept a full record as accurate.

You do not need a bigger list. You need one you can trust when you finally hit send.

This is exactly the gap CSG LeadSearch™ was built to close. Instead of a one-time purchase or a set of generated guesses, it is a contact database of decision makers at chain accounts, refreshed daily. No export caps, no email credit systems, no lead allotments limiting how much of the account universe you can reach. You are working from data that is current when you pull it, not a file someone sold you six months ago, or a set of contacts for a model invented last week.

Buy less. Verify more. Trust nothing you can’t trace.
