AI in B2B has moved past research assistance. It is starting to act. Gartner predicts that by 2028, 90% of B2B buying will run through AI agents, pushing more than $15 trillion in spend through automated exchanges. In that system, Gartner says, verifiable operational data becomes a currency.

That last point matters more than the headline number. When a rep works from a bad list, they notice. An email bounces, a title looks off, a name doesn’t match, and they adjust. An agent does not stop to wonder. It acts on whatever it is given, at scale, and every outdated contact becomes a wasted touch multiplied across hundreds of accounts.
Picture a snack supplier whose AI agent is working a list of regional grocery chains. The category manager it targets at one chain moved into a new role months ago. The agent keeps sending polished, personalized follow-ups to someone who no longer makes the decision, while the person who does never hears your name.
That scenario is about to get more common. A Gartner survey released October 8 found that only 25% of procurement leaders have started redesigning roles because of AI, and Gartner is already publishing redesign guides for buyer and category manager positions. Most of that reshuffling is still ahead, and every changed title, responsibility, and reporting line is one more place your contact data can fall behind.
The B2B teams that get real value from AI will be the ones who build the foundation before they automate. Four moves make a difference.
Audit your data before you buy the agent. Find out how much of your current contact list is accurate before any tool acts on it. An agent can only multiply what you give it.
Decide where people stay in the loop. Gartner expects a hybrid model to become standard, with AI handling routine tasks and people focusing on complex, high-stakes interactions. Let agents research and prioritize and keep your team in charge of the conversations that build relationships with key accounts.
Watch for role changes at your target accounts. As organizations rework procurement jobs around AI, titles and responsibilities will shift. Build a regular check of your top accounts into your process instead of trusting a list pulled months ago.
Treat data refresh as ongoing, not annual. If verifiable data is becoming the currency of B2B, a once-a-year list purchase is no longer enough. The information your tools act on needs to keep pace with the market.
The free CSG Lead Health Index™ is an easy place to start that audit. It scores your team out of 100 across seven areas, including Decision-Maker Coverage, Data Quality, and AI Readiness, compares your results with similar companies, and points to your biggest opportunity along with the CSG solution that fits it best. For the ongoing refresh, CSG LeadSearch™ delivers verified retail and foodservice contacts, updated daily by CSG’s in-house research team, so the data your team and your tools act on stays current.
Agents don’t double-check. Make sure they never have to.
