Outmarket: Things That Go Bump in Q4

Outmarket: Things That Go Bump in Q4

The scariest things in your pipeline don’t wear masks. They hide in your CRM until the quarter’s almost over.

Every horror movie starts the same way. Everything looks normal. The house is quiet. The forecast says you’ll make the number.

Then something goes bump.

Q4 is when B2B pipelines get haunted. Buyers disappear into holiday operations. Budgets lock. And the problems that were hiding all year finally come out of the basement, right when there’s no time left to fix them.

Here’s who’s lurking in yours.

The Thing in the Spam Folder. You hit send and hear nothing back. Validity’s 2026 benchmark puts average inbox placement at 87.2%, which means more than one email in eight lands in spam or never shows up at all. Nobody tells you. The open rate just quietly dies.

It Came From Your Complaint Rate. Google wants spam complaints under 0.1% and never at 0.3%. A few dozen annoyed recipients on a cold list can push you past that line. Once you cross it, even your best customers stop getting your mail.

The Vanishing. Your champion was there in September. Now the email bounces and the LinkedIn says “new role.” Retail’s quits rate hit 3.0% in August, up from 2.4% a year earlier, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In food service it was 3.5%. That’s every month.

3.0% of retail workers quit in August alone, up from 2.4% a year earlier. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)

The Haunted Location. The store is still on your map. The lights went out months ago. Coresight projects about 6,428 U.S. store closures this year. If your territory plan still counts them, you’re forecasting for ghosts.

The Lone Survivor. One contact at the account. One thread holding the whole deal. Forrester says a typical buying decision involves 13 internal stakeholders. When your one contact goes quiet for the holidays, the deal goes with them.

Night of the Living Leads. Duplicates. Retired titles. People who left in 2024 and are still getting step four of your sequence. They never die. They just keep hurting your sender reputation.

So how do you make it through to the credits?

Turn on the lights. Every monster above survives the same way: nobody checks. Before the last campaigns of the year go out, verify the contacts on your top accounts, pull the closed locations out of your territory counts, and add a second and third contact wherever a deal hangs on one person. Then clear the zombies out of your sequences before they do any more damage.

It takes an afternoon. A haunted January takes a lot longer.

Not sure what’s hiding in yours? Take the free CSG Lead Health Indexâ„¢. It scores your lead list out of 100 across seven areas, from data quality to decision-maker coverage, and shows you exactly where the monsters are.

Then chase them out. The CSG LeadSearchâ„¢ databases put verified retail and foodservice decision-makers at your fingertips, refreshed daily, with unlimited exports to Excel, CSV or your CRM, so you can replace the ghosts with the people actually doing the buying.

The call is coming from inside the CRM. Check it before Q1 does.
